Life returned to normal for us after that crazy night I found him tripping balls on the roof of our apartment building. At least for a couple weeks. Living with an artist like Jordan, I’d learned to expect the unexpected, but one night be pushed it too damn far.

“You’re fucking crazy,” I repeated, shaking my head at him.

“Did you even listen to my idea?” he asked in an excited tone.

“Why don’t you get this excited about your art anymore?” I asked.

“That’s the point,” he said. “Without the alcohol or drugs, my work is shit.”

“It is not. I love it.”

“Great. Are you going to buy them so we can survive? That makes no sense at all, Alexis.”

I took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. Despite my love for Jordan, he could really get on my nerves.

“My books are selling better now. You can take a break from painting if you want.”

“So you don’t care about my art?”

He walked away and toyed with a glass elephant figurine on our bookshelf.

“I didn’t say that at all, Jordan.” I walked up behind him and put my hand on his back. “I believe in you, but maybe you need a break. Our lives haven’t exactly been the definition of stability recently.”

“I suppose that’s my fault too.”

“Why do you have to be such an asshole?” I asked.

“Because I’m sober, and I fucking hate it.” He turned around. “That’s why this is a good idea. I’ll be able to make money without getting drunk or high to paint.”

“You can paint without all that shit,” I insisted.

“Can I? How can you say that to me?”

“I’m creative all the time without being drunk. It’s not easy writing books.”

“You just don’t understand.”

“I told you that Charley guy wasn’t good to hang out with.”

“You don’t like any of my friends.”

“That’s not true. Just the ones who are druggies or drunks.”

“Well, he says I can make twice the money I was making selling paintings.”

“Duh. You’d be selling drugs. Heroin at that. I’m not down with that at all.”

“You can’t control me,” he said.

“Are you making fun of me?”

I remembered all the times I’d told Big Donnie and other men the same thing.

“If I was making fun, you would know it.”

He stared into my eyes. I didn’t look away.

“I’d just be selling it, not taking it,” he said. “I’ll be fine.”

“That’s the stupidest fucking idea I’ve ever heard.”

“My paintings aren’t selling,” he repeated.

“So you want to ruin everything we have together?”

“What do you mean?”

“I told you, Jordan. I’m not sticking around if you’re going to be drinking, doing drugs and fucking up your life, especially since mine is going so well now.”

“That’s it,” he said. “You don’t need me anymore, huh?”

I shook my head and turned around, unable to deal with him any longer.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“To take a bath. Is that okay with you?” I shot back.

“Whatever. I’m leaving.”

“Bye,” I said, raising a hand in the air as I walked away toward the bathroom.

I heard the door slam loudly. Was I too hard on him? I wondered as I looked in the mirror above the sink.
